Ethiopian peoples are dramatized by regimes and ruled by one ethnic group 5% of total populations

It was 6th Mar2014 on Thursday the program was prepared and co-ordinated by Frontline Club Oslo. The club has great contribution in preparing stage for different issues like debate, seminars and others which is critical and International conflicts among different countries. It is a great step for countries like Ethiopia to have this   opportunities to explain the current and worst situations by Ethiopian Regime to the rest of the world. It was a great presentations and debate by guest speakers invited Mr. Obang Metho and Mr. Abdullah Hussen. Those great persons of the time to show the Current Ethiopian situations. The program was began by one of founder of Frontline club Mr.Truls Lie( Chairman).

The program started with speech prepared by Mr.Abdullah Hussen who has worked government Ogden region official from 2008 to 2012 went out of the country in 2012 Now lives in Sweden. He is
Head of media region
Chairman of Somali regional of youth association
Advisor of president of ogaden towards youth development
Member of Ethiopia youth executive committee one of youth founder.
On the vedio presented by Mr. Abdullah Hussen we clearly see the government officials and police officers including the commissioner are confessing their human right abuse by their own mouth. Arbitrarily arresting, torturing and killing number of prisoners. In relation to this, number of prison and prisoners human right report and Report of Utlendingsforvaltningens Land info about Ethiopia prison state that the exact number of prisons is unknown, but there are an estimated 120 federal and regional prisons. In addition to this, there are prisons and detention centres connected to police stations and on the woreda and kebele administrative levels. No independent or international organization has access to Ethiopia’s prisons. That makes it difficult to know how many people who are detained. In 2010 it was estimated that 86,000 were imprisoned, but the figure is very uncertain. Usually women and men have separate prison facilities. Landinfo’s sources describe prison conditions as generally bad, with prisoners facing serious abuse and intimidation. Being whipped with wires and electrical cords and threats of being injected with HIV-infected blood are some of the methods used.
Mr. Abdullah Hussen said that due to the torture and killing a lot of Ethiopians will go to neighboring countries especially Kenya to get protection. To support his statement, Each year, over 350,000 Ethiopian refugees flee. Here are the top 4 destinations of Ethiopian refugees fleeing each year.
1) Yemen – 100,000 Ethiopian refugees
2) Kenya – 90,000 Ethiopian refugees
3) Sudan – 67,000 Ethiopian refugees
4) Eritrea – 55,000 Ethiopian refugees

In addition, in 2011 Swedish journalists were captured, prisoned and faced charges of being territories.   Unfortunately, they were journalists at wrong place and time for the government. Because their government is concerned about them they are freed as a result of long diplomacy. However, there are many Ethiopian internationally recognized journalists who are jailed, tortured and called terrorist by their government till this day.
Finally, for the western countries, World Bank and many donor communities I would like to invited part of Human right Report titled “All they want is confession”
To the Donor Community
  • Publicly and privately raise concerns with Ethiopian government officials at all  levels regarding torture, ill-treatment, and other human rights violations in  Maekelawi and other detention facilities in Ethiopia. Press especially the federal  affairs minister, the federal police commissioner, and the justice minister to adopt  policies to end the abuse and ensure those responsible are held to account.
  • Public urge prompt, transparent, and impartial investigations into allegations of abuse in detention facilities.
  • Actively seek unhindered access to Maekelawi and other detention facilities for international human rights and humanitarian organizations and for diplomats.
  • • Urge Ethiopian officials to invite relevant UN and AU human rights mechanisms, including the UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to visit Ethiopia.
  • Monitor trials of defendants charged with offences under the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation and call on the authorities to protect all defendants’ right to a  Public hearing.
  • Call for the amendment of the Charities and Societies Proclamation and the Anti- Terrorism Proclamation. Next guest is Mr. Obang with owesome speech  saying “Ethiopia-an abusive home for its people” in his speech denying about Ethiopian Economy which reported wrongly. Who rule the country is in illusions and most people are suffering a lot due to mistreatment by the Ethiopian regime .Finally he forward the message to Norway to stop donating the killer government.
Norwegian government had an agreement with Ethiopian Intelligence in 2012  which leads torturing and harassing their own innocent peoples and peoples of Ethiopians are dramatized by Ethiopian regime.Ethiopian regime prepared the law called Anti terrorism law which objectively helped to attack the people for example who write an article against the government is labeled as “ a terrorist”which is painful. The Government in Ethiopia is not elected by Ethiopian people, there is only one seat opposition who has a right  to speak only 3 minutes do you think that this  is the right thing?? Do you believe that there is a democracy in this way?? in Ethiopia particularly one ethnic group only 5 % of the  population controlled the whole country by force. Mr. Obang forwarded his message to whom it may concern and gave an assignment to all to fight for freedom and stop human right violations.

Ethiopia: Transparency Group Should Reject Membership (Human Rights watch)

Repression of Civil Society Contravenes Organization’s Rules
MARCH 14, 2014
(New York) – A major global initiative to encourage governments to better manage natural resource revenues should reject Ethiopia’s bid for membership due to its harsh restrictions on civil society, Human Rights Watch said today.

The governing board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is expected to make a decision about Ethiopia’s candidacy at its next meeting, on March 18 and 19, 2014, in Oslo. EITI was founded in 2003 to strengthen governance by increasing transparency over revenues from the oil, gas, and mining industries. Itsmembers include countries, companies, and civil society representatives.

“The Ethiopian government has crushed activist groups and muzzled the media,” said Lisa Misol, seniorbusiness and human rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Ethiopia’s harsh repression of independent voices is utterly incompatible with this global effort to increase public oversight over government.”

An earlier effort by Ethiopia to join the transparency group was rebuffed in 2010 out of concerns over a draconian 2009 law, still in effect, that sharply limits the activities of independent groups. Civil society representatives on EITI’s board said that the law contravened the initiative’s standards that make thefree and active participation of independent organizations a requirement for a country to join.

The board deferred the decision, and suggested that it would not reconsider “until the Proclamation on Charities and Society Law is no longer in place.”

Supporters of Ethiopia’s membership, including Clare Short, the former United Kingdom minister who has been the group’s chair since 2011, have recently pressed the board to overturn its 2010 decision. On February 28, Short publicly endorsed Ethiopia’s candidacy and criticized those who opposed its membership in an unprecedented open letter to civil society members of the board. She argued for loosening the group’s rules and claimed that civil society in Ethiopia favored her position, even though nongovernmental organizations in the country cannot risk criticizing the government.

“It’s absurd to suggest that Ethiopia deserves to join EITI because it has civil society support after the government has systematically intimidated groups into submission,” Misol said. “EITI would become a reward for Ethiopia’s effort to dismantle and silence civil society, providing a perverse incentive for other governments to do the same thing.”

Ethiopia’s repressive laws and policies have severely undermined independent activists and organizations in the country. Many organizations have been forced to greatly reduce their activities, others engage in self-censorship, and still others have had to close down. Several of the country’s leading activists have fled the country due to threats. New government-backed nongovernmental organizations have formed. One group that supports the government’s drive to join EITI is a journalism union described as “government-controlled” by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The 2009 Proclamation on Charities and Society Law curtails the independence of nongovernmental organizations in Ethiopia, particularly groups that scrutinize the government. It forbids national organizations from receiving more than 10 percent of their funds from foreign donors if they engage in human rights, advocacy, conflict resolution, or governance activities. The law also bars organizations from activities related to state policy, functioning, and accountability.

It established a regulatory body, the Charities and Societies Agency, with broad discretion to arbitrarily cancel organizations’ registration and to levy fines and criminal charges against their personnel.

To join EITI, Ethiopia should be required to repeal or substantially amend the 2009 proclamation to eliminate problematic clauses that limit foreign funding, restrict certain types of activities, and grant far-reaching powers to a government agency to regulate activities of independent groups, Human Rights Watch said. Additional preconditions should be tied to media freedom and respect for otherfundamental rights necessary for open public debate on natural resource topics.

“Admitting Ethiopia into EITI now would send a terrible signal about the initiative’s commitment to core principles about the participation of civil society,” Misol said. “The board should insist on meaningful reforms in Ethiopia so that the government demonstrates its commitment to the initiative’s principles and rules before it is admitted.”
